Lifelong Paso Robles resident, Mike Thorndyke, 67, unexpectedly passed away at Twin Cities Community Hospital on Sept. 27 after a brief illness.
Mike was born in July 1942 to Mervin “Bud” and Marjorie “Marnie” Thorndyke in San Luis Obispo. The Thorndyke family first settled in Cambria and his great grandfather, Captain Thorndyke, was the first lighthouse keeper of the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse.
Mike, a Paso Robles High School graduate, led an active and productive life.
He managed Wayside Liquor for his parents before becoming the owner. He was later joined by his brother, Jim Thorndyke, in proprietorship of the business. He was also part owner of The Talk Shop and The Gold Coast Ice Company.
After selling his partnerships in those companies he joined Paso Robles Ford, Lincoln Mercury and later became its voice on his regular Friday morning talks on KPRL.
Earlier in his life, Mike enjoyed hunting. He was an avid sports fan of the San Francisco 49ers and Giants and always a supporter of the Bearcats. He loved bowling, as evidenced by years of participation in the local bowling leagues. Mike also loved old cars and had owned several. He loved people and enjoyed gatherings with family and friends.
Mike was a past city council member and active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club.
He was a loving husband, father and proud grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie (Cary), daughter Dana and husband, Tom, Thiel, son Brian and wife, Stephanie, Muir and grandchildren Kelsy, Camryn and Conner Thorndyke, his brother, Jim Thorndyke and wife, Linda, and niece Tina and husband, Kris Gustafson and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and niece, Alena Thorndyke.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 at Dove Creek Nazarene Church at 9333 Santa Barbara Road in Atascadero.
